January
17, 2008 - As previously announced,
Tri-County Motor Speedway in conjunction with Joe Schmaling and Mart
Nesbitt will begin their season Saturday March 8, 2008. The 1st annual
“Icebreaker” event is shaping up to be a huge day of racing.
The new Super Cup Stock
Car Series will make their first of three appearances at the speedway in
2008 with a 100 lap feature event. These cars are Pro Cup style cars very
similar to NASCAR Nationwide Series cars. The series ran an exhibition
race last fall and it ended up as one of the most exciting races of the
year at the speedway! Drivers from Iowa to Florida along with many local
hot shoes will be vying for the first victory of the season. We are
expecting a full field for this inaugural event.
The "Icebreaker 350"
will also feature a 75 lap Street Stock event. This will be a special
non-points event. We are expecting a large field of Street Stocks from
Tri-County, Hickory, Newport and other surrounding tracks! The division
will use Tri-County’s weekly Street Stock rules. The event will be 75
laps and cautions will not count. Spotters will be allowed for the
event. The cars will be running on USED 2602 slicks just as they will on
a weekly basis. You will be allowed to bring your own tires to the
event. However, no new tires, two lap scuffs or soaked tires will be
allowed. If your tires are deemed to be superior to average used tires,
you may be asked to purchase tires at the event. We will be checking with
a durometer and tread depth gauge. If you do not have tires, we will be
selling tires at the track. The cars will qualify for this event and the
top 8 will draw for their starting position after qualifying. This event
will pay $500 to win and if there are 25 or more cars it will pay $700 to
win!
In addition, the
“Icebreaker 350” will feature two 50 lap events for the Miniature
Motorsports Racing Association (MMRA). The event will be run as a
Southeast Super Mini-Cup regional qualifier event. These exciting
divisions will feature 1/2 scale Sprint Cup style stock cars. We will
have the “RaceDog.com 50” which is a 50 lap event for the Open division.
This event will pay $500 to win! In addition, we will also have a 50 lap
event for the Future Stars division paying a minimum of $150 to win. This
division is for the younger drivers moving from Quarter Midgets and go
karts to the larger stock cars.
Last but not least, the
ever popular Enduro division will run one of its three special events for
the 2008 season. This division will run 75 total laps with no cautions.
We have modified the rules this year to further restrict what an Enduro
car is. The rules will closely match the Newport Enduro rules. Thus, if
you build a car to run this event, you will be able to run at least 5
events in 2008! This is an excellent entry level of racing. And, yes,
we will once again be allowing passengers for this event! The race will
pay $400 to win! Complete rules for this division will be available on
this website or you can email us at
jschmaling@supercupstockcarseries.com.
The Super Cup Stock Car
Series cars will arrive for an optional practice and tech day on Friday.
In addition, the track will be available for testing for all divisions on
Friday for a small per car fee. All divisions with the exception of the
Enduro event will receive practice and qualifying on Saturday. A complete
detailed schedule of the day’s events will be posted in the near future.
All divisions (except SCSCS) should contact
Tri-County Motor Speedway for more information.
As you can see, the
“Icebreaker 350” should be a huge day of racing and a giant kickoff to the
2008 Super Cup Series and Tri-County Motor Speedway! Admission for this
event will be the same as a regular Tri-County event and annual parking
passes will be honored. Race time is initially planned for 3:00 PM.
Make it a point to come out and join us for this exciting event! For
